Well this is why you do it.

I decided that I should upgrade my trusty laptop from XP Home to Pro.  I had a CD and a key and away I went.  Thank God I waited until after our Qumana management meeting to try this stunt.

As you can gather it didn’t go well.  Rather, it pretty much hosed my machine.  Okay back to XP Home, but … Yeah, but I wound up trashing everything.  Documents, settings, applications.  Good side, I have a nice, clean install of XP now.  Bad side, well I have a ton of apps to reinstall, documents to retrieve, and tweaks to re-tweak.  However, I’m not as stressed as you might think.  I did a back up of My Documents just before I tried this.  Carbonite has been running for a while, and while far from complete, I think a good few things are backed up that I might need.

This is why you back up.  Disaster recovery.  Granted I’m my own disaster right now, but hey I’ll make it.  Other stuff that will save my tush:

Plaxo:  All 1400+ contacts are backed up, as are tasks, notes, and calendar items.

Attensa online:  I synced all my feeds recently.

GMail: For the last little while GMail has been my primary mail.  I have a good amount backe up, but I’m not really worried if I lose some of that e-mail.

Favourites?  Just made a copy.  Passwords?  I’ve been trying Roboform and Pass2Go lately.  While I think I’ve added a couple passwords today that I might have lost, Pass2Go (on a handy USB drive) has like 90% of them.

Yeah this probably won’t be a fun evening, but I do get a chance to figure out which applications I really use and only load those ones.

So take it from me.  Just bakup.

Well this is surprising (to me at least), according to a study via Reuters—Few US workers who could telecommute do so: study | Reuters.com—(hat tip to Laura) about 25% of U.S. workers could telecommute, but only about 11% of workers do.  Now the question is why.

Technology?  Partially.  Getting access to office systems can be a hassle.

Culture? Probably.  This is the big one.  People are so, so used to being in an office, doing a lot of face to face meetings, all the stuff we’re used to.

I talk about culture and technology in my book (yes, I’m still working on it).  Of the two, culture is the hardest to fix.  VPNs aren’t nearly as hard as they used to be (this is the hardware/software that lets you access the office from home), but workplace culture is still based on butts in chairs.

Well when it costs a small fortune to get the butt from home to chair … well things are going to have to change.

Shel Israel was kind enough to let me send him the early draft of this book over the weekend.  I value Shel’s opinion very highly, so when he took time to give me this feedback, well who am I not to listen:

 … The only change I would make is at the Intro. The dialog there, I think, would be stronger if it were between you and your kids or wife and kids. Had a friend who was making $300 K a year, flying all over the world for a publisher. One day he arrived home from a three-week junket and his 4-year-old answered the door, looked up and called out, “Mommy, there’s a man at the door.” That was the day he knew it was time to quite. He wanted to see his kids grow up.

This is a true story. The guy had already made sacks of money so it was easy for him. For the rest of us, home office is a survivalist answer. The decision to do it is an emotional one.

I think you should open by taking it from this emotional tack.

So here it is … the first public unveiling of a part of my book.  The Introduction (still a draft, of course):

Already doing the telecommuting thing and just looking for some comic relief?

I’ve been a telecommuter (or teleworker) since 2000. It hasn’t always been easy, and it hasn’t always been fun. I’ve had employers who just didn’t get it and employers who did.

I’ve worked in my robe and had meetings in my garden. I’ve also started meetings at 5 AM and gone well into the night.

If you think the whole telecommuting thing a is the life of Riley … well it is pretty cool, but it’s still work.

This book is about my life as a telecommuter, I’m going to pass on my tips, tricks, and stories. I’m not going to paint a rosy or dismal picture, I’m going to make it real, honest, and funny.
Before we get to the good stuff, let me tell you my story.

When I was living in the States and working for big pharma, my commute to work was an easy 40 minutes each way. Traffic? Traffic could push that to an hour or more. During that time my daughter was born. She’s 8 and a half now. I loved my daughter more than anything and my (then) wife and I chose to live in the country with a good county school system so she could have a yard to play in and all that. But at what cost? When she was a baby, I couldn’t for the life of me get her to fall asleep easily. If she was having a rough night she’d finally fall asleep after exhausting herself, not me getting her to sleep. This doesn’t even consider my partner then. She knew that no matter what I was at least 40 minutes from home. She knew I’d be home "late". I pulled lots of long hours then trying to establish myself.

Fast forward a few months, we’ve moved to Canada. I’m still with big pharma, and still commuting. My daughter is older now, but still my partner knows that I’m a while from home. Now I’m on the management track. More long hours. More pressure.

We started looking for a quieter place to live than the semi-urban outer parts of Toronto. All the places we looked, were pushing my commute closer to an hour each way.

My responsibilities and role in the company weren’t, of course, lessening at all. That was when we decided to take a vacation to B.C. to visit family. Wow, beautiful, amazing. We should move. By February of 2000, after much wrangling, I was working from home and still for big pharma.

Two years later my son was born. Not only was I there at his birth, as I was at my daughter’s, I was there all the time. Sure I still had to work, but there wasn’t a delay getting to or from work. If needed I’d come in early and then work later, with the baby monitor in my office.

My son doesn’t know what it’s like for Daddy to "go to work". Daddy has always worn slippers to work. I love my daughter, but my son and I bonded so much more closely than she and I in those early months. I could get my son to drop off almost effortlessly. Sometimes just holding him in the store, he’d be out like a light.

I didn’t miss a thing in the first three years of his life. Nor did I miss a thing in my daughter’s either during that time.

Sure, working from home is more convenient, good for the environment, heck even more fun than "the office". The thing is though, it’s so much more than that. It’s being a part of your family’s daily life. The ups and downs. The rhythm that makes a family tick. Even now, as my life is rather different now, my kids get picked up, I bring them home, and we have fun. Sure, I have to work sometimes when they are here, but I still make them lunch. See the latest art creations while the crayon is still warm or marker wet. I am right there when a game is mastered. A puzzle finished for the first time.

When it comes down to it, I’m just there.

In the end, that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?

Thank goodness for MindManger! The outline has been a pretty easy part of the process. I add new things and move others around as I see fit. This is the outline du jour. I think it’s pretty much there.

No, not a blog about books, a blog about my book.  Right now it’s titled "Daddy Wears Slippers to Work" and is pretty much a how to guide to being a successful teleworker/work at home kinda person.  Now, if you read my main blog (A View from the Isle) you know that I like to spin a good yarn.  And if you’ve hung out with me, know know that I have more than a few stories up my sleeve about working from home.

I am still looking for a publisher.  I’m hoping it won’t be too hard.  I think more and more people are interested in working at least some of the time from home and I know a lot of my friends already so … here it goes.
