DownloadSquad is wondering why don’t you use RSS? While I wonder why people wouldn’t, I actually have some insight into why. It’s still a wee too geeky. I keep meaning to get Lorraine set up with Q Reader (aka Lektora), but I keep forgetting. Also Lorraine just doesn’t really see the value. She doesn’t read as many blogs as I do (if by read you mean skimming 20 headlines and excerpts every 15 seconds when I hit page down). Now, for teleworkers, RSS is an important info gathering tool.
Trying to keep up on what people are saying about your company, brand, you, competitors on the blogosphere? RSS-based search results are really the only efficient way to do it.
How to get started? Well I have to plug Q Reader for the entry level RSS person. I think it’s the easiest and least geeky out there. And hey it just works within your browser (IE and Firefox) so you can’t beat that.
Then Q Reader is going to start you off with some feeds we think you’ll like. Keep them or delete them, doesn’t matter to us. The point is make an RSS reader your daily info hub. But why should teleworkers get this over office folks? Well office folks should too, but teleworkers, I’ve found, tend to have a little more tech savvy than most users, so the learning curve shouldn’t be too bad. But what it really comes down to is that at home, you need, I think, more info sources than most. Maybe it’s the pressure of needing to prove you’re working. Maybe it’s the solo-consultant who needs an edge, whatever the reason, I think it’s generally true.
Maybe I’m not making my case well here. Okay so I’m going to do a variant of a bet my Geology advisor made with me 15+ years ago (that one was keep a pocketknife in your pocket for a week), try an RSS reader for a week. Start with the default feeds and maybe click on a few of those cool RSS icons around on your favourite sites. After a week I bet you’re going to wonder how you lived without it and amazed at how much new information you’ve found.
Okay, go and get your reader (Q Reader, FeedDemon, Attensa for Outlook are all ones I’d suggest … Bloglines is web-based and is a good starter too). And to make it easier … here’s a link to the feed of this blog and my main blog.
Now, come back in a week and tell me how you’ve done.
