Last month (yikes that was a long time ago!) I wrote about Carbonite and then gave a sample chapter on backup solutions. On View from the Isle I wrote a little follow up article (why I didn’t post it here is beyond me … hmm maybe I’ll do that now …) on it. Bottom line I was very impressed with it. Yes, they had some early bandwidth issues (understandable) and a couple of my e-mails fell through the cracks (like that’s never happened to me), but the service and the concept, I thought, were awesome. So was the price. Okay until I got my bills. Ouch. So I put off subscribing and uninstalled it.
Well Sunday Jess from Carbonite e-mailed me wondering why I didn’t subscribe, since it appeared I liked it so much. Well, I told Jess that I was pinching pennies for a while, but maybe we can do a trade. Yes, you guessed it. There is a spiffy Carbonite logo there on the right in exchange for a license. No, I haven’t sold out. I only want to use software that I like. And I will not just ask for a free license to get one if I don’t think I’m going to use the software. So, now you know. Carbonite gave me a free license, and that’s it.
Okay, why do I really like Carbonite? It’s painless. The backups just happen (little green dots by a file let you know it’s backed up vs yellow which means it’s queued). Not only that the default setting for backup is to back up the oft-forgotten Applications Settings directory. Where’s that? Why should I care? Well it’s buried in your account settings and it has your favourites, cookies, and a myriad of other settings. And most folks, even us pros, often forget to back it up. Carbonite doesn’t.
Do I recommend Carbonite? Yes, totally. Should you still have a local backup too? Yep, better to be safe than sorry … if you can’t get to the Internet, you can’t get to your files. As I was thinking through this post, yes I do think a little before I type, I also realized that if you’re away from home, as soon as you connect to the Internet, you’re backups will continue. So road warriors take note … you can keep data safe, even away from home base. Now that is a feature that might save a few tushes. No good having a great backup of all your files if you delete an important one and it’s stuck on a DVD at your desk.
So I can’t say this enough. You need to back up. For me Carbonite is running (it’s re-doing my initial backup since my trial expired more than 15 days ago), I have a flash drive for my book, and every night SyncToy backs up my My Documents folder to an external drive. Yeah, it’s a lot, but boy has it saved my tush on more than one occasion.
