Carbonite backup solution … few early hiccups, but looks good.

I wrote about Carbonite on my book blog earlier this month. Well now my trial (extended) is almost over and I think I’m going to subscribe to the service. I like the piece of mind that my files as backed up as I create and update them. It’s all done in the background, all smooth and easy. What about bandwidth conservation? You can set it to throttle back to allow Vonage and Skype to run free. I also made use of the 10 min pause feature when I needed to devote all my bandwidth to a task.
I did have some questions about the service. First it took about 16-17 days to back up my roughly 19 gigs of files. I was told that Carbonite was having some issues that made the transfers go much slower than expected and they even extended my trial a few days so I could see if it finished. It did finally finish, I noticed an improvement in throughput as well.
Two questions lingered for me. What if I decided not to sign up? What would happen to my data uploaded during the trial? I was told that after 15 days, it would be deleted too. Nice. The second question I haven’t received an answer on yet, long-term stability. This is an important one. I’m trusting my critical data (they even by default backup your application settings) to them, what if they fail tomorrow? That’s important and I hope to hear from them soon about it.
Until then I’m still going to run my automatic local backup too.

Hi - glad to see another carbonite user. I was very happy under XP, but having just flipped to Vista x64, carbonite no longer works. it installs, but fails to show any shell extensions to allow selection of files to backup/restore, and also errors are being reported in the system error log from the “Volume Shadow Copy” service.
I’ve reported to carbonite and really hope they can support Vista (inc. x64) soon, now that gold code is out (ie via MSDN etc) - especially as many of these users will be early adoptors.
I’ve also made some posting at http://cherrybyte.blogspot.com
